The syllabus details this assignment as:

Ethical Decision-Making Using the DO ART model,
This 6-to-8-page paper should reflect your best effort in terms of level of thought and reflection,
construction of paper, grammar, sentence structure, and spelling. The papers are to be typed and
double-spaced, proofread, and show development of your thoughts and subject matter in an
organized way. Give the paper an “authentic voice” but also demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding of the topic selected. Use APA (American Psychological Association) format for
professional writing (7th edition). Cite 2 outside sources and 1 or more relevant ethics codes, using
in-text citations and a reference page. Cite specific Ethical Codes from Art Therapy or an adjacent
profession and explain how you might apply each (or why you might choose not to) in this scenario.

Choose ONE of the following client case studies (either case scenario #1, Guadalupe, or scenario
#2, Ray) and use the DO ART model by Hauck and Ling (see required resources, Week 2) to analyze
the scenario. Describe your thinking in detail for each step of the DO ART model, identifying the
Dilemma, Options and Outcomes, Assistance, Responsibility, and Take Action steps as you see
them.

When addressing the “Dilemma” step, explore the context of power and identity, answering the
following questions:
• What cultural and historical factors are at play in this scenario? What public institutions are
relevant to consider (i.e. schools, health care settings, organized religion, police and prisons,
government, etc.) and what are your personal values related to these institutions?

• What identity experiences related to factors such as race, class, gender, age, sexuality, ability,
language privilege, citizenship, etc. are relevant for this client? What are your intersectional
experiences pertaining to these same identities?

• How are the client’s unique cultural values and identity experiences being taken into account when
assessing the scenario? How could a power differential between you and the client affect the
welfare of the client?

From Hauk & Ling, authors of the DO ART model, This article acknowledges the noticeable absence of art making in the model. There has been much literature indicating that art making informed by tenets of art therapy can provide valuable insight into decision-making, and help externalize the thought process, thus including art in the ethical decision-making process allows art therapists to utilize their strengths. This article expands and improves upon the DO ART ethical decision-making model to include art directives that may assist art therapists in more effective decision-making that better honors the traditions and pillars valued by the field.

Another article to which Hauk and Ling are contributors; Although several ethical decision-making methods exist, there is a dearth of research evaluating their use and effectiveness. This study examined graduate student papers by both art therapy and counseling students that applied either the DO ART model (developed for art therapists) or the ABCDE worksheet (for general mental health usage) to case vignettes that were rated on several ethical decision-making criteria: obligations, moral ideals, consequences, and bias. Results suggest the DO ART model is as effective as the ABCDE worksheet; art therapists are as effective as other practitioners in the use of ethical decision-making models.
AAMFT Code of Ethics

The Board of Directors of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) hereby promulgates, pursuant
to Article 2, Section 2.01.3 of the Association’s Bylaws, the Revised AAMFT Code of Ethics, effective January 1, 2015.
The AAMFT strives to honor the public trust in marriage and family therapists by setting standards for ethical practice as described
in this Code. The ethical standards define professional expectations and are enforced by the AAMFT Ethics Committee.

Art therapists, counsellors, and mental health professionals who utilize arts-based interventions encounter many, sometimes unexpected, ethical issues (Moon, 2000). Because it is crucial that these professionals enter into an open dialogue about potential ethical dilemmas, this article discusses several areas that have unique implications in the art therapy field (the therapeutic space and art materials, the rights of artwork, the use of art techniques by other professionals, and art therapy research). In doing so, it references the ethical codes of the two national art therapy associations in North America - the Canadian Art Therapy Association’s (CATA) Standards of Practice and the American Art Therapy Association’s (AATA, 2011) Ethical Principles for Art Therapists. Where possible, it considers the larger community of mental health professionals by referencing the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association’s (CCPA, 2007) Code of Ethics. Future directions are discussed.

As a profession that formed in relation to larger forces within science, psychology, and more, the field of art therapy is not immune to the systems of oppression woven throughout Western culture and has incorporated practices that, even unwittingly, perpetuate the oppression of American Indian peoples today. This article contextualizes the U.S. art therapy field within the larger legacy of historical, systematic efforts to eradicate Native sovereignty in the United States, questions the subordinate position of Indigenous peoples, and critically examines and deconstructs the continued oppression of American Indian peoples today through situated and subjugated knowledge, cultural appropriation, cultural genocide, and colonial amnesia.
The Life Cycle of Images: Revisiting the Ethical Treatment of the Art Therapy Image by Lisa D. Hinz

Using the metaphor of the human life cycle, the author of this viewpoint suggests that consideration of the birth, life, and death of images made in art therapy may promote a new perspective on their ethical treatment. A developmental view of images encourages art therapists to see art images as living entities that undergo a natural life cycle. The birth process adds meaning to the image and encourages the careful tending of images newly born. An “adolescent” image might challenge its creator, whereas images in “middle age” or later may be revisited to offer new perspectives.
