CULTURAL CONFLICTS

Barriers that arise from cultural variations in communication may lead to alienation and/or an inability to develop trust and rapport. In a clinical setting, such barriers could lead to ineffective treatment and/or termination. In research contexts, they may result in low-diversity samples, low participant engagement/satisfaction, and/or excessive bias in data interpretation. Barriers to effective cross-cultural counseling can include:

Language Barriers
Limits to Cultural Self-Awareness

Limits to Cultural Knowledge
Deficits of Multicultural Counseling Training/Culturally Appropriate Counseling Skills
and Client Distrust and Fears, Stemming from Racial, Cultural, and Generational Trauma
