Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) Based on the idea that the way someone thinks and feels affects the way they behave. Aims to help clients identify, challenge, and change maladaptive thought patterns in order to change their responses to difficult situations.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) A structured program with a strong educational component designed to provide skills for managing intense emotions and negotiating social relationships. Specifically, emotional regulation through mindfulness should diminish their power to direct a client's actions.
Ecotherapy A synthesis of ecology and psychology seeking to expand and remedy the connection between humans and nature. A central premise is that while the mind is shaped by the modern world, its underlying structure was born from a natural, non-human environment. Treatment is conducted outdoors.
Integration of Traditional Approaches to Healing Many cultures prescribe to traditional healing practices that are markedly different from Western approaches. Such alternatives are deeply ingrained in their respective culture's worldviews, with increased emphasis on a wide array of values and ideals. Learning about diverse beliefs and practices can increase critical inquiry into the status quo, and - with respect and where appropriate - instigate positive change.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Based on the idea of multiple sub-personalities or families within one's mental system which are often in conflict with each other. It focuses on healing the wounded parts and restoring mental balance with the Self, a concept describing the core of every individual.
Motivational Interviewing A counseling method that helps resolve feelings and insecurities preventing one from finding the motivation needed to change behavior. A practical, short-term process often used to address addiction or the management of physical health conditions.
Narrative Therapy Views people as separate from their problems or destructive behaviors. Empowers clients to confront the dominant storylines or narratives they currently experience in order to make changes in their thought patterns or behavior and "rewrite" their life story.
Person-Centered Therapy Employs a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take the lead in sessions - and in so doing have the ability to discover their own solutions. The therapist simply acts as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment while acknowledging the client's experiences.
Psychodynamic Therapy Derived from psychoanalytic therapy, it postulates that talking about problems in a therapeutic setting can be extremely valuable for the individual. Less focused on the patient-therapist relationship and more on the client's relationship with their external world.
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Helps clients identify self-defeating thoughts, challenges the nature of irrational or unproductive feelings, and replaces them with healthier, more productive beliefs. Corrects one's tendency to distort reality with worst-case scenarios or absolutist, all-or-nothing thinking.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy A widely used therapeutic treatment that concentrates on finding solutions in the present and exploring one's hopes for the future in order to find a quick and pragmatic resolution to a problem. Assumes that with the appropriate coaching and questioning, client's are capable of finding the best solutions.
