ADDICTION AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million American adults battled a substance use disorder in 2017. The NSDUH further found that drug abuse and addiction cost American society more than $740 billion annually in lost workplace productivity, healthcare expenses, and crime-related costs (American Addiction Centers, 2023). Addiction and Substance Abuse is a condition that diminishes quality of life and effectiveness in individuals, threatens destruction of interpersonal and familial relationships, and harms society as a whole. Practitioners in the helping professions are uniquely situated on the front lines of this far-reaching disorder and just as uniquely positioned to make a difference in the trajectory of the substance abuse epidemic and in the lives of those most intimately affected by it.
